Hosting a Good Event
Hosting and event planning is requires organization, foresight, flexibility and a deep understand of guests' needs and desires. When I develop parties, events and trips I work within constraints of space, time, distance and of course money. All my events are customized and designed.
Guests come late, weather changes, drinks spill and food burns. The Earth keeps spinning, the party goes on and there's always Domino's. It's most important that my guests are relaxed and having a good time. I worked as a Professional party host for over a year in in 2003 serving all age groups and party styles. I am trained in Sensational Service by by Oliver Winery.
The premier priority is to create an enjoyable time for my guest. Period.

Creative Container Wine Party
This party is a spin on a traditional wine tasting. I invited my creative HCId classmates to bring a bottle of wine they want to share along with something non-traditional to drink from. It was an exercise in creativity, the exploration of otherwise mundane objects and
Defamiliarization. Non-tradtional cups made for quality conversation points too. Wine parties have the potential to be snobby or intimidating if guests don't know much about fermented beverages. This is an easy way to make it casual and more inviting.
Wine and martini glasses were used for candle and appetizer trays since they were not needed for drinking. Wine bottles were used as flower vases.

Make Parties Easy
The point of the party was for friends to introduce each other to new wines. Guests had a great time and I, the host, was relieved of significant expenses and a sink full of fragile dishes.
Get Weird (& defamiliarize)
I invited HCId classmates to attend their only final exam for the first semester dressed
strange. In Jeff Bardzell's HCI Foundations course, students arrived in a non-traditional outfits without the the Professor or Associate Instructor's had no knowledge. Intel researcher Genevieve Bell's
Making by making strange: Defamiliarization and the design of domestic technologies ACM paper motivated us to look in our homes and closets to reinvent ourselves.
Playtime is important in liberal fields. It promotes creativity, positive attitudes, fun, ideas, movement and people-to-people interaction. This activity inspires a new way to enjoy an otherwise routine experience and practices rapid prototyping techniques. This also helped break mental models and enjoy ourselves (especially considering we had to take a final exam).

Know Your Itinerary
I like to backpack with flexibility, room for adventure and unplanned opportunities. However, this trip was more structured because I met friends in each country. An articulated itinerary showed me exactly which cities allowed for wiggle room.
Traveling Iberia
I planned a tour with my cousin who was then doing her Master's in Cordoba, Spain. We celebrated the New Year in beautiful Lisbon, made Brazilian friends and discovered fantastic architecture.
